Thanks for taking part in Wairua Warrior 2025!

Please find below some key details which will help you to prepare for this weekend’s event.

Saturday 26 April :

9.30am: All entrants ready for briefing

9.40am: Briefing & warm up

9.55am: Elites to start line

10am: Elites start 5km

followed by Team David

10.25am: Open & Teams

5 minutes between groups of 10

LUNCH

1.00pm: 3km briefing & warm up

1.30pm: 3km start

2.30pm - 3.00pm: PRIZE GIVING 5km & 3km

  • YOU MUST BE PRESENT AT YOUR RACE BRIEFING - YOU MUST BE READY TO RACE AT THE START LINE 15 MINUTES BEFORE YOUR RACE TIME.  

  • 5KM TEAMS RACES WILL BE IN WAVES OF 5-10 MINS APART. 

  • YOUR SWEAT BAND MUST CLEARLY SEEN AND WORN ON YOUR HEAD ONLY, PLEASE NO WRISTS OR ANKLES AND WE ASK THAT THE NUMBER IS NOT UPSIDE DOWN. PLEASE RETURN TO THE CONTAINER BEFORE LEAVING THE VENUE. IF YOU'RE COMPETING IN MORE THAN ONE RACE YOU WILL HAVE THE SAME RACE NUMBER THROUGHOUT. YES YOU CAN TAKE IT HOME IF YOUR EVENTS RUN OVER BOTH DAYS. THE SAME RULES APPLY PLEASE RETURN TO THE CONTAINER BEFORE CLOSE OF DAY 2.

  • OUR RACES HAVE A LOT OF COMPETITORS - we ask that you be patient.

  • PLEASE BE RESPECTFUL TO OUR MARSHALLS and other athletes. 

ELITES ONLY: Prizegiving will be announced on the schedule for each day.

RACE PACKS:

Thursday 24th April 6pm at Eddyline Brewery, 8 Champion Road, Richmond 7020

All participants must register to race! This includes picking up your headband and RFID timer chip and checking in to confirm you will be racing. Please note children will not be supplied an RFID timer chip.

PLEASE BRING A BAG FOR TIMING CHIPS & HEADBANDS IF YOU ARE COLLECTING FOR MORE THAN ONE COMPETITOR.

The code of conduct and health and safety waiver will be emailed to you on receipt of your race confirmation.

For those travelling out of the region and can’t make Thursday registrations, you can register on the day of the event STRICTLY BY PRIOR ARRANGEMENT ONLY Registration will be open from 8.15am - midday only.

NOTE: RACE PACKS WILL NOT BE ISSUED ON THE DAY WITHOUT PRIOR ARRANGEMENT.

RACE LOCATION:

This years Wairua Warrior is taking place at Nelson Obstacle Park, Nelson Tasman’s newest recreation park!

Venue Address: 1133 Moutere Highway, Upper Moutere, Tasman. 

We will have big Wairua Warrior signage by the front gate.

We can be found on Google maps under “Nelson Obstacle Park” 

  • The venue is approx 2km from the Upper Moutere Village.

PARKING (Cash only):

Premium parking is available onsite. This parking is first in, first served basis and costs $5 per car. There are a limited amount of accessible carparks located in this carpark (carpooling is recommended).

ADDITIONAL PUBLIC PARKING: Within 5 minutes’ drive to the event located at Moutere Hills Community Centre. A shuttle service will be available, $2 per person, every 10-15 minutes.

Strictly no parking allowed along Moutere Highway road at any stage due to road restrictions and safety. Traffic Management will be on site.

WHAT YOU NEED TO BRING/KNOW:

  • Warm clothes, comfy shoes and wear something you are comfortable to race in (ground is rugged and uneven). 

  • We know you love your furry friends but please leave your pets at home. 

  • A change of warm/dry clothes/shoes to wear after your race and maybe a tarpaulin,  towels etc for your car seats. Our well seasoned global OCR participants will be very familiar with this. It could be very muddy and we have a water obstacle! NOTE: There are no showers onsite. 

  • Please bring plenty of drinking water.

  • Any snacks you may want to have on the course with you (gels/gummies/electrolytes etc). 

  • There are portaloos onsite including one accessible toilet. 

  • This is a busy community event and we really appreciate athletes helping us out when they are not racing - please put your hand up to be a Warrior Ambassador and do your bit to make the day be a huge success. Talk to the organisers about how you can help.

  • Make the most of the event, we encourage you to support the delicious local food trucks on offer. Please be prepared with cash/eftpos. You are also more than welcome to bring your own packed lunch.

  • This is a family friendly event - please no alcohol or smoking/vaping onsite.  

  • Spectators are welcome at the event, so please bring your supporters! The course is designed to give everyone a great view of you racing. 

  • Please bring your own sunblock, hats, bug spray and any medication you may need.

    PLEASE LEAVE VALUABLES AND DOGS AT HOME!

Full Code of Conduct:

Section 1: GENERAL CODE OF CONDUCT

a) Wairua Warrior competitors are expected to always behave in a manner that shows respect to others including fellow competitors, marshalls, spectators and event organisers.

b) Wairua Warrior competitors are to conduct themselves in a manner that no person at the venue, on the course, through social media online or otherwise shall be offended, hurt, discouraged or hindered in any way from participating in the race to the best of their ability.

c) The same shall apply regarding consideration for everyone enjoying the broader event’s atmosphere of fun, challenge, spirited competition and mutual support.

Section 2: REGISTRATION AND START RULES

a) All Wairua Warrior competitors must complete a liability waiver online as part of the registration process.

b) All Wairua Warrior competitors will receive their Wairua Warrior race pack at the Event Registration (Thursday 24th April unless prior agreement has been made for race day) which will include: Wairua Warrior race number and wristband.

c) All Wairua Warrior competitors will need their race number written clearly in vivid on either their arm or forehead.

d) All Wairua Warrior competitors will start at their allocated wave times and must report to the start line 15 minutes prior to their start time warmed up and ready for the race briefing. Any delay or change of start time will be announced over the PA system.

e) Under no circumstance are you allowed to change your start time unless clearing with Wairua Warrior Race Management first.

Section 3: WAIRUA WARRIOR RACE RULES (OPEN WAVES - Individuals and Teams, Mini Warrior)

a) All obstacles are to be attempted. If, for any reason, you are unable to complete or choose not to complete an obstacle, you will perform 15 burpees before proceeding on to your next obstacle.

i. Each burpee must meet the technique outlined in APPENDIX 1.

b) All adult Wairua Warrior competitors will be able to view their time using the QR codes around the finish line. All teams will record just one (1) time for their team and they must start and finish as a team.

c) All Wairua Warrior Race Marshalls have full authority on their obstacles. Look to them for guidance, help, motivation and of course MUDDLES! (Muddy cuddles)

d) If at any time you or someone you know needs medical attention, please notify the nearest Marshall and they will contact our medic.

e) We have a hydration station throughout various locations on the 5km and 10km course.

f) All Mini Warriors under 10 must have an adult supporter with them. Adult supporters are asked not to use the obstacles.

Section 4: WAIRUA WARRIOR RACE RULES (ELITE WAVE ONLY)

a) Wairua Warrior Elite Racers must follow the course map provided to them, completing all obstacles in their intended order and must not venture off the course. If the course is unclear, use your common sense as well as your integrity as an Elite Racer, skipping obstacles or avoiding challenging terrain is considered a breach of the Wairua Warrior code of conduct and the participant could be disqualified with “did not complete” status.

b) Wairua Warrior Elite Racers must attempt all obstacles on the course, if the obstacle cannot be completed after one (1) genuine attempt this is considered a standard infringement and the competitor must complete the burpee penalty before proceeding.

I. The thirty (30) burpees must be performed upon the infringement being identified. if you know you’ve not completed it correctly, please don’t wait for a Marshall to let you know.

II. Every effort must be made not to obstruct any other competitor, Wairua Warrior Marshall or otherwise, whilst completing their burpee penalty.

III. Each burpee must meet the technique outlined in APPENDIX 1.

IV. All burpees must be performed to the satisfaction of a Wairua Warrior Marshall, if present. The Wairua Warrior Marshall may decide that additional burpees be completed due to incorrect technique/form.

V. Not all obstacles may have a Wairua Warrior Marshall present to count and check the correct technique. Elite Racers are expected to always complete burpee penalties correctly as a matter of honour and to maintain the Wairua Warrior code of conduct.

c) An Elite Racer cannot accept outside assistance to complete any obstacle or during the race unless otherwise given permission by the Wairua Warrior Race Director prior to the race.

i. Slower and faster competitors must demonstrate mutual respect, especially in single-track situations.

ii. Faster competitors must pass on the right after calling “PASS.” In doing so, the faster competitor does not interfere with the slower competitors’ progress.

iii. An Elite Racer causing a bottleneck is expected to yield immediately to end the clog.

d) All Wairua Warrior competitors will be given their finishing time as they cross the finish line and the RFID timing chip will note their full time. These timings are final and the QR codes provided allow access to overall race times.

e) All Wairua Warrior Race Marshalls have full authority over their obstacle. Look to them for guidance, help, motivation and of course MUDDLES! (Muddy cuddles)

f) If at any time you or someone you know need medical attention, please notify the nearest Marshall and they will contact our medic.

g)We have a hydration station throughout various locations on the 5km and 10km course.

Section 5: SPECTATOR COURSE ACCESS – STRICTLY NO DOGS ALLOWED!!!

a) There is FREE access to our Wairua Warrior course to all spectators and supporters providing;

i. They conduct themselves in a manner that no person at the venue, on the course, through social media online or otherwise shall be offended, hurt, discouraged or hindered in any way from participating in the race to the best of their ability. They strictly stay in the marked areas on the course map.

ii. They adhere to Wairua Warrior Officials’ instructions at all times.

iii. No vehicles except Wairua Warrior, and First Aid official vehicles are permitted on/or around the course and they have right of way at all times.

iv. You do so at your own risk. Wairua Warrior Obstacle Course Race and Nelson Obstacle Park are not liable for any injury/harm caused by you entering the course area as a spectator or supporter failure to adhere to these rules may result in you being asked to leave the course area and/or venue.

We kindly ask all spectators support our affiliated charity the Life Education Trust with a generous donation - the volunteer collectors will be circulating throughout the day.

Section 6: PHOTOS & PRIZE GIVING

a) All competitors wanting photos, make your way over to our Wairua Warrior photo and sponsor board where our race photographer will be waiting. All official Wairua Warrior photos can be viewed and purchased from www.shuttersport.co.nz we will notify you on our Wairua Warrior Facebook page when they are ready to view.

b) Prizegiving will be held at Hub 1 and will commence after the last racer is across the line. Times TBC.

Section 7: SHOWERS/TOILETS

a) There will be toilets available onsite.

b) There will be NO showers onsite, so please bring a change of warm clothes.

Section 8: THE HUB - WAIRUA WARRIOR RACE AND SUPPORTERS AREA

a) We have a wide variety of vendors onsite ranging from coffee, smoothies, food etc. to purchase. Bring cash as eftpos facilities may not be available at some vendors.

b) Please use the recycling and rubbish bins provided at all times - we would be grateful if you use the correct bin when recycling!

APPENDIX 1: OFFICIAL WAIRUA WARRIOR BURPEE METHOD

1. From standing upright position.

2. Squat, hands on the ground.

3. Thrust legs back in a single motion, placing the body in a plank position.

4. Do a press up. The chest MUST touch the ground.

5. Draw legs back into the squat position in a single motion.

6. Jump straight up. Feet MUST leave the ground.

7. Hands must raise above the head.

8. Wairua Warrior Elite Racers MUST count their burpees out loud.
